Vizag School Faces Probe Over Upside-Down National Flag Hoisting
The national flag was reportedly hoisted upside down during the Independence Day celebrations at the Zilla Parishad High School in Chandrampalem, near Visakhapatnam, on Saturday. The incident, which took place at one of the prominent government schools in the state, was noticed by students and faculty members and has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters.
According to eyewitnesses, the tricolour was unfurled in the wrong manner during the morning ceremony, a breach of the Flag Code of India, which lays down precise rules for the display and hoisting of the national flag. The Flag Code mandates that the saffron band should always remain on top when the flag is hoisted or displayed. An inverted flag is considered a severe sign of disrespect, particularly on a day of national importance such as Independence Day.
Expressing displeasure over the incident, Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao directed the Education Department to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and submit a report. In a statement, the MLA said that such lapses are unacceptable and that accountability must be fixed. He also advised school authorities to ensure proper training for staff in handling and hoisting the national flag.
The school administration has yet to issue an official response. Local officials said they would cooperate with the inquiry and take corrective measures. The district education officer is expected to examine whether the incident was a result of negligence or lack of awareness.
The incident has reignited discussions about the need for greater awareness of the flag code and proper ceremonial practices in educational institutions. Social activists and citizens have called for mandatory guidelines and periodic drills in schools to prevent such occurrences. Many pointed out that the national flag is a symbol of sovereignty and pride, and its handling should never be taken lightly.

They assured that the findings would be made public once the report is submitted.
The incident has also drawn reactions from political leaders, who expressed concern over the lack of reverence shown to the national flag. Some have urged the government to introduce compulsory modules on the flag code and national symbols in teacher training programmes to ensure such lapses are avoided in the future.
