Vivekananda Kendra president A. Balakrishnan passes away at 88
All India President of Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Vivekananda Kendra, Kanniyakumari, A. Balakrishnan, passed away at a private hospital in Nagercoil at 12:05 am on Thursday. He was 88 and had been suffering from age-related ailments.
His body has been kept at the Vivekananda Kendra in Kanniyakumari for the public to pay their respects. Last rites will be performed on Saturday, August 29, according to a statement from the organisation.
Balakrishnan had a long and distinguished association with the organisation. He served as its general secretary from 1981 to 2001, vice-president from 2001 to 2020, and president since 2020. He was closely associated with the founder, Eknath Ranade, and was among the earliest workers of the Kendra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over his demise. On his official X account, Modi said Balakrishnan had dedicated more than five decades of his life to the ideals of Swami Vivekananda and to serving society. He also mentioned that Balakrishnan had worked tirelessly across the country, with a particularly deep association with the northeastern states.
The Prime Minister highlighted Balakrishnan's role in educational, social and nation-building activities. He offered his heartfelt condolences to the entire Vivekananda Kendra family and all admirers.
The Vivekananda Kendra, established in 1972, is a spiritual and service-oriented organisation inspired by Swami Vivekananda's teachings. It focuses on education, rural development, women's empowerment and social welfare. Under Balakrishnan's stewardship, the organisation grew significantly and expanded its activities to many remote parts of India.
His special connection with the northeastern region was well known. He guided several initiatives in education, healthcare and community development across states like Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland. His work earned him respect among local leaders and voluntary workers.
The Vivekananda Rock Memorial, a prominent monument in Kanniyakumari built in honour of Swami Vivekananda, is also managed by the organisation. As president of both institutions, Balakrishnan played a key role in preserving their legacy and promoting their activities.
Colleagues and followers remember him as a humble and disciplined leader with an austere lifestyle. His relentless commitment to social service and organisational work won him admiration from across the political and social spectrum.
Tributes have been pouring in from various quarters. Many have recalled his simplicity, integrity and dedication to the ideals of Swami Vivekananda.
The organisation has not yet announced a successor. An official statement on the future leadership is expected in due course.
Balakrishnan's mortal remains will remain at Vivekananda Kendra in Kanniyakumari until the funeral on Saturday. His life and work remain an inspiration for thousands of volunteers and social workers.
