Video evidence leads to arrest of man for assault on woman in Kerala train
In a swift action based on a video recorded by a co-passenger, the Railway Police have arrested a man from Rajasthan for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman on board the Madgaon-Ernakulam Express. The accused has been identified as Satish Kumar, a native of Karauli district in Rajasthan.
The incident took place near Pattambi in Kerala's Palakkad district while the woman was travelling from Kozhikode to Ernakulam. A fellow passenger noticed the assault and recorded it on a mobile phone, which later became a key piece of evidence.
The woman immediately alerted the Railway Police from the moving train. Her complaint, along with the video, was transmitted to the control room. Based on this, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Anil Mathew was positioned at Shoranur railway station. When the train arrived, Kumar was apprehended without resistance.
Police have registered a case under non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code. Kumar, who is from Karauli, had been residing in Kerala for work as a tile worker in Kozhikode and Vadakara. He was produced before a magistrate and has been remanded in judicial custody.
The Railway Police have not yet disclosed the specific sections under which the case has been filed, but sources indicate that the charges relate to sexual assault and outraging the modesty of a woman. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are also examining whether the accused has a prior criminal record.
Officials have praised the victim for her presence of mind and the co-passenger for stepping in with a mobile phone recording. In recent years, such recordings have increasingly served as crucial evidence in securing convictions in public transport-related offences.
Railway authorities have reiterated the importance of immediate reporting. Passengers can seek help through the Rail Madad app, the national helpline 139, or by alerting train staff. The authorities have also intensified patrols on long-distance trains and deployed additional security personnel, particularly for night journeys.
In a statement, a Railway Police officer said that the safety of passengers, especially women, is a top priority. "We acted on the complaint instantly and ensured that the accused was taken into custody at the next station. The video was instrumental in confirming the sequence of events," the officer said without revealing further details.
The victim has been offered legal and emotional support, including counselling, as per standard procedure. Her identity has been withheld to protect her privacy.
The Madgaon-Ernakulam Express is a popular route connecting Goa and Kerala, carrying a large number of daily commuters and tourists. This arrest sends a clear signal that such offences will be dealt with strictly, police added.
