Veteran IPS Officer Mahesh Dixit Appointed New Director of Intelligence Bureau

The Union Government on Thursday appointed Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He will take over from Tapan Deka, who has served as IB chief for the past four years.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Dixit's appointment for a tenure of two years from the date he assumes charge, according to a Department of Personnel and Training order.

Dixit has spent over 26 years in the Intelligence Bureau, with significant experience in Jammu and Kashmir. He served two stints in the region: first from 2009 to 2012, and then from 2020 to 2025. His extensive work in counter-terrorism and internal security is expected to guide his leadership at the IB.

Outgoing Director Tapan Deka, a 1988-batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been at the helm for four years. The transition comes at a time when the intelligence agency continues to play a critical role in national security.
