Venezuela Thanks India for Earthquake Aid Offer; Modi Expresses Condolences
Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India's offer of assistance following two powerful earthquakes that struck near Caracas, causing widespread damage and triggering rescue operations.
In response to PM Modi's message on social media platform X, Rodríguez stated that Venezuela welcomes India's support and solidarity during the humanitarian crisis. She noted that the solidarity shown by India is consistent with the longstanding cooperation between the two nations.
PM Modi had earlier expressed deep sorrow over the devastation, offering condolences to the victims' families and affirming India's readiness to extend all possible assistance.
The two earthquakes, recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), caused significant structural damage, including the collapse of several buildings. Following the disaster, Rodríguez declared a nationwide state of emergency as authorities launched rescue and relief operations.
International support has also come from other leaders. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed 'heartfelt solidarity' and said authorities are working to activate humanitarian aid channels. US President Donald Trump offered American assistance, posting on Truth Social that he had instructed US agencies to prepare for rapid aid deployment. Venezuela acknowledged the US support, noting constant contact with Venezuelan authorities.
India and Venezuela have historically maintained friendly ties, with cooperation in areas such as energy and development. This latest response reinforces the bilateral relationship during times of crisis.
