Uttar Pradesh to add 250 electric buses to public fleet at Rs 425.5 crore
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the purchase of 250 electric buses for the state's road transport corporation, at an estimated cost of Rs 425.50 crore. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Finance Minister Suresh Khanna, briefing reporters after the meeting, said the state government will provide Rs 400 crore from its budget during the 2026-27 financial year, while the remaining Rs 25.50 crore will be borne by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC).
Khanna stated that the buses would help modernise public transport, provide environmentally friendly mobility, and improve passenger amenities. During procurement, preference will be given to manufacturers based in Uttar Pradesh to promote industrial activity in the state.
This move aligns with the central government's push for electric mobility and aims to reduce pollution from the transport sector. Electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to cleaner air in cities. The state transport corporation currently operates a fleet of over 10,000 buses, of which a small fraction are electric. The new addition will significantly increase the share of zero-emission vehicles.
The purchase is subject to standard procurement procedures and timelines. The government expects the buses to be operational within the next two to three years, depending on manufacturing and delivery schedules.
