Uttar Pradesh Mulls CBI Probe into Alleged Theft at Ayodhya Ram Temple

The Uttar Pradesh government is considering transferring the investigation into the alleged theft and embezzlement of funds and valuables donated to the Ram temple in Ayodhya to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or another central agency, according to sources.

The case involves economic offences that require a deeper probe, making a central agency investigation a viable option, officials said. The state government's Special Investigation Team (SIT), which submitted a preliminary report on its findings, has been granted time until July 15 to complete its inquiry. The SIT is set to revisit Ayodhya on Thursday to conduct further investigations.

The Ram temple, a major religious and political project, has attracted significant donations from devotees across the country. Allegations of mismanagement and misappropriation of these funds have sparked public concern and demands for a transparent probe.

The state government's move to potentially involve the CBI comes amid calls from opposition parties and religious leaders for a thorough and impartial investigation. The SIT's preliminary report is believed to have identified irregularities that warrant a more extensive examination.

If the case is transferred to the CBI, it would mark a significant escalation in the investigation, given the agency's expertise in handling complex financial crimes. The decision is expected to be made after further consultation with legal and administrative experts.

The development underscores the sensitivity of the issue, given the temple's cultural and political significance. The government has stressed its commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in the management of donated funds.
