USS Lincoln's 250-Day Deployment: Strain, Delays, and a Long-Awaited Return

The USS Abraham Lincoln, a US Navy aircraft carrier, is finally set to return home after an extended deployment in the Middle East that has lasted approximately 250 days. The Navy's announcement comes amid growing concerns about the living conditions and morale of the crew aboard the vessel.

Originally scheduled to return in May, the carrier's stay was extended indefinitely due to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. This has meant that the ship and its nearly 5,000 sailors have remained at sea without a port call since December last year, a prolonged period that military experts note is exceptionally demanding.

BBC Verify has been tracking the carrier's movements using satellite imagery, which confirms that the ship last docked in December. The images show a vessel that has been continuously operating in the Arabian Sea and surrounding waters, with only brief resupply and refuelling stops at sea.

Reports from aboard the ship have highlighted deteriorating conditions, including cramped living quarters, limited food variety, and increasing fatigue among the crew. While the US Navy has not officially commented on these specific reports, it has acknowledged the challenges of extended deployments and stated that the welfare of the crew remains a top priority.

The Navy's statement that the carrier will 'soon' be brought home has been met with relief by families and veterans' groups, who have been vocal about the strain on sailors. However, no exact date for the return has been given, and the ship's departure from the region could depend on the evolving security situation with Iran.

An extended deployment of this nature is not unprecedented. During the peak of US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, carriers routinely exceeded six months at sea. But the current 250-day stretch is at the upper limit of what is considered sustainable without compromising crew readiness and mental health.

The USS Lincoln's mission has been part of a broader US military posture in the region, aimed at deterring Iranian aggression and protecting shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. In recent months, the carrier has conducted numerous exercises and patrols, often with heightened alert due to threats from Iranian missiles and drones.

For the sailors on board, the daily routine is demanding. Twelve-hour shifts are common, and the constant hum of the ship's machinery, the lack of natural light, and the uncertainty about when they will see land take a cumulative toll. Some crew members have reportedly sought mental health support, and the Navy has increased the availability of counselling services remotely.

Experts say that while the Navy has systems in place to manage such long deployments, the human cost is real. A 2019 study by the RAND Corporation found that extended at-sea periods are linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders among sailors.

The return of the USS Lincoln will provide some respite. After months at sea, the crew will undergo a period of rest, maintenance, and family reintegration. But the broader question of how the US Navy balances operational demands with sailor welfare remains. For now, the families waiting on the docks in San Diego can take some comfort in the Navy's assurance that their loved ones are coming home.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
