US tightens economic pressure on Iran with fresh sanctions, naval blockade

The United States has announced a new wave of sanctions targeting Iran's economy, including a naval blockade, in an effort to cut off revenue streams. The measures, part of what the US Treasury Department and the Pentagon have called Operation Economic Fury, come after months of protests in Iran over rising prices and inflation.

The Iranian economy has been struggling under international sanctions for decades. Official figures show that in the 12 months to February 2026, prices for basic necessities rose by an average of 60%, with food prices doubling. The situation has led to widespread protests, with many Iranians blaming their government for the economic difficulties. Earlier this year, President Trump told demonstrators to "keep protesting," saying "help is on the way."

In April, the US imposed sanctions on foreign banks and firms doing business with Tehran, after military operations did not result in the overthrow of the Iranian government or its surrender, as the US had initially hoped. Operation Economic Fury aims to degrade Iran's warfighting capability by cutting off its revenue, and includes a naval blockade to stop Iranian exports.

In June, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Iran and the US that included a clause stating the US would "terminate all types of sanctions" against Iran on an agreed-upon schedule. The details of this agreement, however, remain unclear.

Despite the new measures, some Iranian residents express confidence in their ability to withstand the pressure. One resident in the central Iranian province of Khuzestan told the BBC that Iran has long experience with sanctions and will be able to overcome the additional economic pressure. "There may be an impact at first, but that doesn't necessarily mean Iran won't be able to overcome the crisis," he said.

Another resident expressed doubt that fresh penalties will affect the longevity of the government. "Not everything changes because of statements made by President Trump," she told Middle East Lifeline. "Iran has been living under sanctions for years, and people have become accustomed to this situation. I'm sure Iran will find other ways to continue trading. Of course, there will be some impact and the economy may weaken, but that doesn't mean it will collapse."

The effectiveness of the sanctions remains to be seen. While the US has stated its intention to pressure the Iranian government, the resolve of the Iranian people and their ability to adapt will play a crucial role in the outcome. As one resident noted, Iran has a history of resilience under pressure.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
