US Envoy and Indian Minister Deny Report of Rejected Quick Trade Deal
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday rejected a media report that claimed India had turned down a quick trade agreement with the United States.
In a post on social media platform X, Gor called the report 'fake news' and said, 'No one has rejected anything. Both sides had very constructive meetings and reaffirmed their commitment to finalising a trade deal. We continue to stay actively engaged.'
Earlier, Goyal had described the report as 'completely false, baseless and misleading'. He said his meetings with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in June were 'fantastic' and that both sides were committed to a 'balanced, commercially meaningful' agreement.
The trade deal is in its final stages, with Gor stating last month that it is 'in the last 1 per cent' of completion. Goyal echoed this, saying that a 'very fair and equitable' deal is near, with only minor details remaining.
The proposed agreement aims to give India preferential access to the US market, providing an edge over competitors like Southeast Asian nations.
