US-Canada trade tensions escalate as Trump hits back at Carney's retaliatory tariffs

Washington, August 23, 2026 – The United States and Canada are locked in a deepening trade dispute after President Donald Trump responded sharply to Prime Minister Mark Carney's announcement of retaliatory tariffs. The exchange follows the collapse of trade negotiations between the two allies.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, Mr. Trump criticised Canada's stance, writing: "Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!" He also accused Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years, adding, "No more!!!"

Mr. Carney had announced on Saturday that Canada would impose new tariffs effective September 8, notably targeting U.S. steel and dairy products. This move came in response to fresh U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, which took effect on Saturday. The U.S. tariffs, set at 50%, affect approximately $20 billion worth of goods – roughly 5.5% of Canadian exports to the United States.

The escalation marks a significant deterioration in trade relations between the two neighbours, which have historically maintained one of the world's largest and most integrated economic partnerships. Analysts note that the dispute could have broader economic implications for both countries, affecting industries from manufacturing to agriculture.

While the White House has framed the tariffs as a measure to protect American industries and workers, Canadian officials have described the U.S. actions as unfair and contrary to longstanding trade agreements. Ottawa has signalled that it is prepared to defend its economic interests while leaving the door open for renewed dialogue.

The timeline for negotiations remains unclear. Earlier discussions had aimed to resolve differences over tariffs and market access, but those talks broke down without a deal. Both governments have yet to announce a new round of talks.

Trade experts point out that the conflict could strain diplomatic relations beyond commerce, given the close cooperation between the two countries on security and other strategic issues. The tariff dispute may also complicate the upcoming North American leaders' summit, where trade was expected to be a key agenda item.

As the September 8 deadline approaches, businesses on both sides of the border are bracing for higher costs and potential supply chain disruptions. Industry groups in both countries have urged their governments to return to the negotiating table to avoid a prolonged trade war.

The situation remains fluid, with officials in Washington and Ottawa yet to comment further. However, the strong language from the respective leaders suggests that resolving the dispute will require careful diplomacy and a willingness to compromise.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
