US approves $2 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia amid escalating West Asia conflict

The United States State Department announced on Wednesday (July 16, 2026) that it has approved an estimated $1.96 billion in weapons sales to Saudi Arabia to bolster the kingdom's air defences. The move comes as the conflict in West Asia intensifies.

According to a statement from the State Department, the proposed sale 'will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a Major non-NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Gulf Region.'

The weapons package includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems and their warheads. The US Navy describes these systems as 'an inexpensive way to destroy targets while limiting collateral damage in close combat.' The principal contractor will be BAE Systems, based in Nashua, New Jersey.

The sale is intended to 'improve Saudi Arabia's capability to deter current and future threats by strengthening its homeland defence, and improving interoperability with US forces, and other regional and NATO forces,' the statement added.

The announcement follows a Houthi missile attack on Monday on an airport in the southern Saudi city of Abha. The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have been engaged in a prolonged conflict with a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. That attack came after the Yemeni government struck Sanaa airport, targeting a flight returning from the Iranian supreme leader's funeral with a Houthi delegation on board. The Houthis have blamed Riyadh for that attack.

The arms sale also occurs against the backdrop of renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran. The US has reimposed a naval blockade and escalated attacks on Iran, as the two countries return to a state of war.

The State Department assured that 'there will be no adverse impact on U.S. Defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.'
