UPI turns 10: Transaction volume multiplies nearly 13,000-fold in a decade
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched on August 25, 2016, has completed ten years of reshaping India's digital payments ecosystem. Annual UPI transaction volume surged from 1.78 crore in 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in 2025-26 — a nearly 13,000-fold increase, according to a statement from the Finance Ministry.
Transaction value during the same period rose from ₹0.07 lakh crore to approximately ₹314 lakh crore, marking a more than 4,000-fold growth. The platform, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the Reserve Bank of India's oversight, has witnessed unprecedented expansion in both volume and value over the past ten years.
Milestones in 2026 highlighted this trajectory. In May 2026, monthly transactions crossed 2,300 crore for the first time, reaching 2,320 crore. This was followed by 2,366 crore transactions in July 2026 — the highest monthly figure in UPI's history.
Institutional participation also broadened considerably. The number of banks live on UPI grew from 44 in 2016-17 to 703 by 2025-26. The Finance Ministry noted that UPI's deep integration into everyday payments, particularly in the merchant segment, underscores its role as a key pillar of India's digital public infrastructure.
The platform has helped bridge the digital divide and strengthened financial inclusion by enabling individuals, businesses, and merchants across the country to participate in the formal digital economy. The simultaneous growth in transaction volumes and values reflects UPI's deepening role in India's high-frequency retail payments ecosystem.
Globally, UPI has drawn recognition for its scale and reliability. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged it as the world's largest real-time payment system by transaction volume. As of 2025, UPI accounted for nearly 49% of global real-time payment transaction volumes, according to the IMF. With over 66 crore transactions processed daily, UPI has become India's dominant payments network.
Originally a domestic innovation, UPI has expanded beyond borders. It is now operational in 11 countries: the UAE, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and Maldives.
Looking ahead, the Finance Ministry said the government remains committed to supporting UPI-led innovation, policy development, and financial inclusion. The next decade is expected to bring further transformation to India's digital payments landscape.
