U.P. launches Jal Sarthi app for real-time tracking of rural water schemes
The Uttar Pradesh government has underscored its commitment to citizen-centric governance by promoting the use of the Jal Sarthi application, a digital platform designed to monitor rural water supply projects in real time. The app, launched in May 2026, is part of a broader effort to bridge the gap between citizens and the administration through technology.
According to officials, the application allows residents to access village-level details of drinking water schemes, household tap connections, infrastructure status, and implementation progress through an easy-to-use interface. Within days of its launch, more than 1.2 lakh people had downloaded the app, and the government is aiming for over five million downloads.
Anurag Srivastava, Additional Chief Secretary of the Namami Gange and Rural Water Supply Department, said, “Citizens can access village-level details of drinking water schemes, household tap connections, infrastructure status and implementation progress through an easy-to-use interface. We are eyeing over five million downloads.”
The app was developed by the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural) and the State Water and Sanitation Mission. It consolidates information related to the Jal Jeevan Mission on a single digital platform, making it easier for citizens to track the progress of water supply initiatives in their localities.
Raj Shekhar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural), stressed the transparency benefits of the platform. “Traditionally, information about government infrastructure projects remained confined to departmental records. Jal Sarathi changes that by allowing any resident to check the status of water supply schemes in their own village,” he said. “For rural households, this reduces uncertainty and improves confidence in public infrastructure programmes.”
Mr. Shekhar, a 2004-batch Indian Administrative Service officer, also highlighted the app’s monitoring capabilities. “Large-scale infrastructure programmes require robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure timely execution and quality outcomes. Digital platforms such as Jal Sarathi complement physical infrastructure by introducing real-time monitoring, geo-tagged assets and transparent reporting,” he explained. The app enables officials, engineers, gram panchayat representatives, and citizens to access the same information, reducing information asymmetry and strengthening accountability.
The application is bilingual, available in Hindi and English, and features an easy search and selection module for public convenience. Data is presented at three levels: state, district, and village. This multi-tier structure allows administrators to identify implementation bottlenecks, prioritise interventions, and improve service delivery.
Mr. Shekhar noted that the Government of India has appreciated the features and content of the app on multiple occasions. “As governance increasingly becomes data-driven, digital public platforms are emerging as essential tools for improving efficiency and accountability,” he added.
The push for digital monitoring aligns with the Uttar Pradesh government’s broader objective of ensuring transparency and timely execution of rural infrastructure projects. By making project data accessible to the public, the Jal Sarthi app aims to foster greater trust in government programmes and encourage community participation in monitoring development work.
