UP CM Yogi Adityanath condemns Opposition's 'unconstitutional, shameful' conduct as Assembly session disrupted

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday accused the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress of engaging in unconstitutional and uncivil conduct during the State Assembly's Monsoon Session. Speaking outside the Assembly, he said the Opposition's disruption of proceedings had undermined democratic values and disrespected the interests of the state's 25 crore residents.

The Opposition had staged protests both inside and outside the Assembly over allegations of embezzlement at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The issue led to heated exchanges and a complete breakdown of normal business in the House.

“The conduct of the Samajwadi Party and the Opposition is unconstitutional and shameful. By disrupting the proceedings of the House, the Opposition is playing with the interests of 25 crore people of the State, and every resident of Uttar Pradesh is witnessing it,” Mr. Adityanath stated. He added that every member of the House gets an opportunity to discuss issues concerning their constituencies, but those who have no faith in democratic values insult and undermine institutions that strengthen parliamentary democracy.

The Chief Minister further noted that the agenda of the House had been finalised during the meeting of party leaders and the Business Advisory Committee. Despite this, he alleged, Opposition members showed no interest in any legislative or supplementary budget-related proposal listed on the agenda.

“The government wishes to hold meaningful discussions on every issue that the Chair invites for discussion under the Rules because our government is committed to public welfare. However, Opposition parties have never believed in democratic values. Instead, they deliberately seek to undermine the dignity of the House and make a mockery of democracy,” he said.

Amid the uproar, Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana expelled SP MLA Sachin Yadav for the remainder of the session. Mr. Yadav had staged a protest displaying a photograph of the Chief Minister during the demonstrations over the alleged misappropriation of funds at the Ayodhya temple.

In the ensuing disruption, Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna presented the Supplementary Budget of ₹59,019.54 crore for the financial year 2026-27. The amount is equivalent to 6.47% of the state's original budget for the year. It includes revenue expenditure of ₹17,399.50 crore and capital expenditure of ₹41,620.04 crore.

Emphasising the focus on capital outlay, Mr. Khanna said, “The government's emphasis on capital expenditure is aimed at accelerating the expansion of roads, energy infrastructure, industries, healthcare facilities, rural development, and other core infrastructure, thereby strengthening the state's economy over the long term.”

Through this supplementary budget, the state government intends to accelerate ongoing development projects, roll out new welfare schemes, and bolster infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh while ensuring timely implementation of both existing and new initiatives.

The developments come amid heightened political tensions in the state, with the Opposition demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged financial irregularities at the Ram Temple. The ruling party, meanwhile, has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated and accused the Opposition of obstructing legislative business.
