U.K. Government Appoints BBC Veteran Gautam Rangarajan as Expert Adviser
Gautam Rangarajan, a senior BBC executive and son of the late Indian diplomat L.N. Rangarajan, has been appointed as an Expert Adviser on Structure and Process to the U.K. government, according to a Downing Street announcement made earlier this week.
The appointment comes as the British government prepares a major restructuring aimed at decentralising political power from London and its bureaucratic heart, Whitehall, to the regions. The Prime Minister's office said Mr. Rangarajan brings significant experience in corporate strategy and transformation.
With over three decades at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Mr. Rangarajan served as Group Director, Strategy and Performance, leading the organisation's strategic direction for more than a decade. He oversaw the corporation's digital transformation, navigating a period of rapid technological change that reshaped how the BBC delivered content across television, radio, and online platforms. Beyond his corporate roles, Mr. Rangarajan is also a singer and has previously worked as a music producer at the BBC.
Born into a distinguished family, Mr. Rangarajan's father, L.N. Rangarajan, was a career diplomat who served as India's Ambassador to Norway, Greece, Sudan, Tunisia, and Iceland. A scholar with roots in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, he was best known for his English translation of Kautilya's Arthashastra, an ancient Indian treatise on statecraft and governance. His mother, Joyce Millward, was a musician from Lancashire in England. His brother, Vijay Rangarajan, is the Chief Executive of the U.K.'s Electoral Commission and previously held senior positions, including a directorship at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The government's reform agenda includes the establishment of a new hub office, referred to as 'No.10 North', in Manchester. This initiative forms part of broader efforts to bring decision-making closer to communities across the United Kingdom, a pledge made by the government ahead of the last general election. The exact responsibilities of Mr. Rangarajan in his new role, however, have not been fully detailed, but his professional background in corporate strategy is expected to aid the government's administrative overhaul.
