UK Cabinet Reshuffle: Three Indian-Origin Labour MPs Elevated to Front-Bench Roles
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced his new cabinet, with three Labour MPs of Indian origin securing senior front-bench positions. The reshuffle, completed on 20 July 2026, reflects a continued emphasis on diversity within the ruling party.
Kanishka Narayan, MP for Vale of Glamorgan, has been appointed as the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, a newly created role that spans the Cabinet Office and the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade. Narayan was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India, and moved to Wales at age 12. He studied at Eton College, Oxford University, and Stanford University before entering politics. He previously served as a junior minister in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology from September 2025.
Satvir Kaur, MP for Southampton Test, has been named Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities within the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, also covering safeguarding and violence against women and girls in the Home Office. Kaur's parents, originally from Punjab, ran a saree shop in Southampton. She previously held a role in the Cabinet Office from September 2025 to July 2026, with a break for maternity leave.
Harpreet Uppal, MP for Huddersfield, has been appointed as an Assistant Whip, responsible for maintaining party discipline and coordinating parliamentary business. Uppal entered Parliament in July 2024 and previously worked on Burnham's 2017 mayoral campaign for Greater Manchester.
The reshuffle also saw Uma Kumaran, a Hindu MP of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, appointed as a junior minister at the Foreign Office. Lisa Nandy, whose father was born in Kolkata, remains in the cabinet as Culture Secretary.
Two Indian-origin MPs moved to the backbenches: Seema Malhotra, formerly Indo-Pacific minister, and Preet Kaur Gill, formerly a junior health minister. Both were considered close allies of former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The appointments bring the total number of Hindu and Sikh ministers in the senior team to four.
