UGC NET row: Experts flag reckless AI use in question paper, NTA denies

The controversy over the UGC NET examination has taken a new turn, with experts alleging that artificial intelligence was used recklessly while drafting question papers. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exam, has denied these claims.

A senior ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the paper-setting process as “ad hoc”, raising further questions about the transparency and reliability of the examination system. The official’s remark has added to the growing criticism faced by the NTA following reports of irregularities in the conduct of the exam.

Experts in education and technology have expressed concern that the use of AI without proper oversight could lead to errors, biases, and a lack of accountability. “AI can be a useful tool, but it cannot replace human judgment in setting exam papers that determine the future of lakhs of students,” said a professor from a leading central university, who did not wish to be named.

The NTA, in a statement, firmly rejected the allegations. “All question papers are prepared by subject experts following a rigorous process. AI tools are not used in the manner described. The claims are baseless and misleading,” the agency said.

This is not the first time the NTA has faced scrutiny. In recent months, discrepancies in the conduct of multiple entrance exams, including NEET-UG and UGC NET, have led to public protests and legal challenges. Critics argue that the increasing reliance on technology without adequate safeguards is undermining the credibility of these high-stakes assessments.

The UGC NET is a crucial examination for determining eligibility for assistant professorships and junior research fellowships in Indian universities and colleges. Any irregularity in its conduct has far-reaching consequences for the academic careers of millions of aspirants.

In response to the growing unrest, the Union Education Ministry has assured students that a thorough investigation will be conducted. “We are committed to ensuring the integrity of the examination process. All concerns raised will be examined,” a ministry spokesperson said.

However, the lack of a clear timeline for resolution has left students anxious. Many are demanding a re-test or at least a transparent explanation of the paper-setting process. “We deserve clarity. Our future depends on this exam, and we cannot afford to be treated like guinea pigs,” said a candidate who appeared for the June session.

The controversy also highlights a broader debate about the role of AI in education. While technology can enhance efficiency, experts caution that it must be deployed ethically and with human oversight, especially in areas with significant public impact.

As the row continues to escalate, the NTA faces the challenge of restoring public trust. The agency’s denial, while categorical, has not been enough to quell the doubts raised by experts and students. The onus is now on the authorities to provide concrete evidence and take corrective measures if any lapses are found.

In a democracy, institutions of public trust must operate with transparency and accountability. The UGC NET controversy serves as a reminder that shortcuts, including over-reliance on AI, can have serious consequences. The coming days will determine whether the authorities can address the concerns and uphold the sanctity of one of India’s most important examinations.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
