UGC Allows One-Year PG Programmes in Online and Distance Mode
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has authorised higher education institutions (HEIs) to offer one-year postgraduate programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online mode, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
In a circular issued recently, the Commission stated that this decision supersedes its earlier notification from July 24. Under the revised guidelines, universities already recognised by the UGC to conduct two-year postgraduate programmes via ODL or online mode can now introduce one-year postgraduate programmes in the same discipline, subject to specific conditions.
The UGC emphasised that the programme must comply with NEP 2020 provisions, relevant UGC regulations, applicable statutory body norms, and the UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes. Additionally, institutions must obtain approval from their competent academic bodies—such as the Board of Studies, Academic Council, or equivalent authority—before launching the programme.
This move is expected to increase flexibility and access to higher education, allowing students to pursue postgraduate studies in a shorter duration through remote learning. The decision reflects the UGC's commitment to implementing NEP 2020's vision of multidisciplinary and flexible education pathways.
