Two workers die in explosion at fireworks unit near Sivakasi

Two persons were killed in an explosion at Shri Krishna Pyrotechnics, a fireworks manufacturing unit at Namaskarithanpatti under Tiruthangal police station limits near Sivakasi, on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as S. Balamurugan, 40, of Sivakasi, and K. Ahmed Ibrahim of Tirunelveli. Police said the two were involved in installing and testing new machinery meant for chemical mixing when the blast occurred at around 1.30 p.m.

Balamurugan died on the spot. Ibrahim, who sustained severe burn injuries, was rushed to the Sivakasi Government Hospital. After receiving first aid, he was referred to the Government Virudhunagar Medical College Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The Tiruthangal police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. The area, part of the Sivakasi region in Virudhunagar district, is a major hub for fireworks and match manufacturing in India, with many units operating in and around the town.

Industrial accidents in such units have raised concerns over workplace safety and compliance with safety norms. However, authorities have not yet released details about the cause of the explosion or whether the required safety protocols were followed.

This incident adds to a history of occasional accidents in the region's fireworks industry, underscoring the need for stringent safety measures and regular inspections. The police said further details would be shared after the investigation is completed.
