Two pilgrims die, five injured in rain-triggered rockfall on Gujarat's Pavagadh Hill
Two pilgrims were killed and five others sustained serious injuries after a massive rockfall struck a pilgrimage route near Patiyapul on Pavagadh Hill in Gujarat early Friday morning. The incident occurred around 6 am when large boulders, loosened by heavy rainfall, rolled down the hillside and trapped several devotees who had arrived early for worship at the Kalika Mata temple.
Rescue operations are underway to clear the landslide debris and extricate any remaining trapped individuals. Authorities have stated that the primary cause of the accident appears to be soil erosion and the sudden collapse of rocks, exacerbated by continuous heavy rain in the region over the past few days.
Local police and disaster response teams are on site, and the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials are assessing the stability of the hill to prevent further incidents.
