Two civilians, including eight-year-old girl, injured in armed group firing in Manipur's Kangpokpi

Two persons, including an eight-year-old girl, were injured in a firing incident by armed groups in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, police said on Monday (July 6, 2026). The attack occurred in Thingkhongjang village on Sunday evening.

The injured, identified as Nengneichong Kipgen (56) and Lamneingah Kipgen (8), were initially provided first aid at an Assam Rifles camp before being transferred to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for further treatment. Security has been tightened around the RIMS campus, authorities confirmed.

The incident follows a similar situation in June 2026, when protests erupted after three Kuki youths, injured in an exchange of fire in Kangpokpi, were admitted to RIMS. Demonstrators, alleging the injured were armed men, attempted to storm the hospital building.

In response to Sunday's firing, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribe in the state, expressed outrage and alleged that the NSCN (IM) and ZUF (Kamson) were behind the attack. The KIM statement described the targeting of an unarmed civilian settlement as "an act of terror against innocent people" and called on the central and state governments to take action, warning that the failure to protect civilians undermines public confidence in state institutions.

Over 50 Engineering Colleges Shut Across India in 2025-26: AICTE

AICTE has ordered the closure of 58 engineering and technical colleges in India for 2025-26, affecting new admissions but allowing enrolled students to complete their studies. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra lead with 12 closures each, driven by low admissions, faculty shortages, and infrastructure issues.
