Two Arrested, Three Detained in Baruipur Child Rape-Murder Case; Prohibitory Orders Imposed

Police in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district have arrested two persons and detained three others in connection with the alleged gangrape and murder of an 11-year-old girl, a senior police officer said on Monday.

The victim's body was found stuffed in a sack in the Surjyapur Haat area of Baruipur, triggering protests by locals who blocked roads, burnt tyres, and damaged police vehicles, demanding the arrest of those responsible.

A six-member Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the matter, the officer added. 'So far, we have arrested two persons. One was arrested last night and another this morning. Along with them, we have detained three others. Our officers are questioning them,' the officer told PTI.

Hours after the body was recovered, a man was beaten to death by angry locals on suspicion of involvement in the girl's death. Authorities have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in Baruipur, Narendrapur, and Sonarpur areas to maintain law and order following the tension.

'The situation is under control, but prohibitory orders have been imposed as a preventive measure to ensure that law and order is maintained. Adequate police deployment has been made in the affected areas,' another senior police officer said. 'We appeal to members of the public not to pay heed to rumours and to cooperate with the administration. Strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb peace,' the officer added.

The Karnataka government has declared it will reject the Centre's latest draft notification declaring Eco-Sensitive Areas in the Western Ghats, covering 20,668 sq km across 1,449 villages. The decision follows concerns from legislators that the restrictions would adversely affect farmers and residents, with the State arguing that the areas are already protected under existing forest regulations.
