Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar found dead in office; probe ordered
Director General of Tripura Police, Anurag Dhankar, was found dead in his office at the police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, July 20, 2026. His body was discovered in the washroom adjacent to his chamber around 11:40 a.m., according to officials.
Sources said Mr. Dhankar entered the bathroom around 11 a.m. and did not emerge for some time. Staff members forced open the door after noticing his prolonged absence. He was rushed to Agartala Medical College and GBP Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where he was declared dead.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with senior government and security officials, visited the hospital upon learning of the incident.
No official statement has been released about the cause of death. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation.
Mr. Dhankar, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service officer, had served as Director General of Police since May 18, 2025. He had served in Tripura for nearly 18 years in various capacities. His sudden death has drawn attention across the state, especially as he was reportedly close to retirement.
