Toxic chromium in groundwater: A decades-old crisis in Uttar Pradesh

For decades, improper disposal of industrial waste has silently poisoned groundwater in parts of Uttar Pradesh. In several villages across three districts, water drawn from handpumps glows bright yellow, a clear indicator of hexavalent chromium contamination. The toxic metal has also left patches of yellow-green earth on the surface, exposing illegal dumps hidden beneath the soil.

The contamination dates back to the 1970s, according to the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The earliest and largest chromium dump was created around 1976 in Rania, a town in Kanpur Dehat district. NGT reports state that 62,225 metric tonnes of chromium waste were dumped there. This waste was removed only about a year ago, after multiple missed deadlines and persistent legal pressure. While the NGT has ordered a boundary wall to prevent chromium-laden dust from spreading, the hazards persist.

The problem extends well beyond Rania. For the past five years, government agencies have collected blood samples from residents in affected areas. A 2025 government report reveals that between 73% and 96% of these samples contained hexavalent chromium levels above safe limits. Yet, despite years of complaints and legal intervention, the response has been sluggish. The government has yet to fully map contaminated zones, provide safe drinking water, or ensure adequate healthcare for those affected.

An even more worrying aspect is that many villages with contaminated groundwater or chemical dumps are not on the state government's official list of chromium-affected areas. This suggests the true scale of contamination is larger than officially acknowledged, potentially putting thousands more people at risk. The Ganga flows not far from these villages, raising concerns about further spread of the toxic metal into the river system.

Villagers have borne the brunt of this environmental failure. Some show visible signs of poisoning, such as damaged nails, which they attribute to heavy metal exposure. The presence of chemical sludge at open dumps, warning signs painted on walls, and corroded water sources paint a grim picture of daily life in these communities.

Residents of villages like Chhiwali, Asifpur-Abhaypur, and Shivnathpura continue to use handpumps and wells that draw contaminated water, often with no alternative. The lack of a comprehensive government response has deepened their vulnerability. While the NGT has intervened, implementation remains patchy and slow.

Experts note that hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen and can cause severe skin and respiratory ailments. Long-term exposure raises the risk of lung cancer and damage to the liver and kidneys. The presence of this toxin in groundwater threatens not just human health but also agriculture and livestock, as the contamination seeps into soil and crops.

The state government needs to urgently expand its list of affected areas, test all vulnerable villages, and provide immediate alternate water supply. Clean-up of dumpsites must follow a time-bound plan. Additionally, a health surveillance programme for residents in the affected regions is essential to assess and treat chronic exposure.

This crisis is a stark reminder of the environmental and human cost of unregulated industrial growth. It is not just a local issue but a national concern that calls for strict enforcement of environmental laws and corporate accountability. The people of these villages have waited long enough for safe water and justice.
