TNSTC conductor killed, 22 passengers injured as lorry rams bus on Tirunelveli–Papanasam highway
A senior conductor of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) was killed and 22 passengers were injured when a tipper lorry rammed into a government bus on the Tirunelveli–Papanasam Highway near Piranchery on Thursday morning, police said.
The deceased was identified as A. Ajith Melwin Arthur, 52, a senior conductor attached to the Valliyoor depot of the TNSTC. He was a resident of Kodumutti near Bethelpuram in Kanniyakumari district. According to the police, the bus was proceeding from Tirunelveli to Papanasam when the speeding tipper lorry struck it at Kozhumadai near Piranchery. Arthur died on the spot.
Twenty-two commuters on board sustained injuries. Passengers and members of the public alerted the police and the fire and rescue services, following which the injured were moved to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Passengers on the bus told officials that the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision. The police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances of the accident, including the speed of the lorry and the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
District Collector Anand Mohan visited the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital after being informed of the accident and met the injured passengers. Dean Selvarajan briefed the Collector on their condition and the treatment being provided. Details of the injuries and the condition of those admitted were not immediately disclosed.
Minister for Transport A. Vijay Thamizhan Parthibhan condoled the death of the conductor. In a statement, the Minister said the untimely demise of Arthur in the accident was a great loss to the TNSTC and to his family.
The death of a bus crew member in the line of duty has renewed attention to the risks faced by transport workers on the state's highways, and to the role of heavy vehicles such as tipper lorries in serious road crashes. Officials have not commented on whether any safety lapses contributed to the incident.
Road accidents remain a leading cause of unnatural deaths in India, with the Union government and state administrations running periodic drives to enforce speed limits, vehicle fitness norms and driver rest rules. Investigators in this case are expected to examine the lorry's records, the driver's duty hours and the condition of both vehicles as part of the inquiry.
The TNSTC, which operates intercity and mofussil services across Tamil Nadu, has not issued a separate statement beyond the Minister's condolence message. The body of the conductor was moved for post-mortem examination, and further legal steps will follow the completion of the police investigation.
Readers in the region who witnessed the accident or have information about it can share details with the local police station, which is handling the case.
