TISS Postpones Convocation Hours Before Ceremony, Citing Security Concerns

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, has postponed its 86th annual convocation, which was scheduled for August 2. The decision was conveyed to graduating students through an email sent shortly after midnight on Thursday, just two days before the event, citing “unforeseen circumstances”.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant was to be the chief guest at the ceremony, with Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Ravindra Ghuge, attending as the guest of honour. The sudden postponement has left hundreds of students and their families who had made travel and accommodation arrangements in a state of uncertainty.

Institute officials and student representatives said the move stemmed from campus security concerns and intelligence inputs regarding potential student protests targeting the dignitaries. The administration reportedly feared that protests linked to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement could break out during the event. These reports have not been officially confirmed by the institute, which has not named any specific groups in its public statements.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, the institute administration said: “The Institute assessed that the ceremony could not be held in a conducive environment and that proceeding as scheduled could have affected the wellbeing of students, faculty, staff, dignitaries, guests, and campus life.”

The statement added: “The Institute had to take the difficult decision to postpone the Convocation in the best and long term interest of the Institute as well as preserving the wellbeing of students, faculty, staff, dignitaries, guests, and campus life. The Institute stands with you at this difficult moment and also seeks your cooperation in carrying forward the legacy of the Institute with dignity and respect.”

The postponement has triggered widespread frustration among graduating students and their families, many of whom had booked flights, trains, and hotels. In a subsequent official statement, TISS acknowledged the severe inconvenience caused to families and said requests for financial assistance due to the last-minute cancellation would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

The administration assured students that a revised date for the ceremony will be announced soon and that provisional certificates will be provided to those who require them immediately. Students awaiting their degrees for employment or higher education have expressed concern over the delay.

TISS is one of India’s premier social sciences institutions, and its annual convocation is a significant event for the academic community. The last-minute postponement raises questions about event planning and crisis management, and follows a pattern of campus tensions that have occasionally disrupted academic functions in the country.
