Tiruppur launches help centre for migrant workers in textile hub
The Tiruppur district administration has launched a ‘Migrant Workers Help Centre’ to ensure the safety and well-being of labourers employed in textile, garment, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the district. The initiative was unveiled during the Independence Day celebrations held here on Saturday (August 15).
The help centre is designed to provide comprehensive assistance to migrant workers, who form a significant part of the workforce in Tiruppur’s booming textile industry. Through a dedicated phone line (0421-2345100) and WhatsApp number (9482676719), workers can seek information related to employment, accommodation, wages, healthcare, government welfare schemes, grievances, and emergency support. Complaints lodged will be addressed in coordination with the departments concerned, said District Collector Manish Narnaware, who launched the helpline. The service will operate from 9.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Earlier in the day, the District Collector hoisted the Tricolour on the premises of Chikkanna Government Arts College and received the ceremonial salute from the police. The event was attended by Commissioner of Police, Tiruppur City, S. Rajeshwari; Superintendent of Police Srishti Singh; MLAs; and senior officials from the Revenue and other departments.
During the celebrations, the District Collector distributed certificates of appreciation to 101 police personnel (35 from the city police and the rest from the rural police), 10 Fire and Rescue Services personnel, and 270 other government officials and staff members. In recognition of meritorious services, a total of 381 awardees were honoured. The Collector also paid tribute to descendants of freedom fighters and handed over welfare assistance amounting to ₹23.47 lakh to five beneficiaries under various government schemes.
The highlight of the Independence Day celebrations was a series of cultural programmes presented by over 600 school students, featuring patriotic performances that resonated with the audience.
Tiruppur, often referred to as the knitwear capital of India, attracts a large number of migrant workers from different states, including Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam. These workers are employed across the textile value chain, from spinning and weaving to garment manufacturing. The launch of the help centre is seen as a proactive step by the district administration to address the challenges faced by this vulnerable segment, ensuring they have access to essential services and grievance redressal mechanisms.
The initiative aligns with broader government efforts to protect migrant workers’ rights and improve their working conditions. By providing a single point of contact for multiple needs, the help centre aims to reduce the difficulties migrant workers often encounter in navigating administrative processes in an unfamiliar environment. Officials have urged workers to utilise the helpline for any assistance, assuring them of prompt and coordinated action on their complaints.
