Tirumala Brahmotsavams: TTD suspends sevas, special darshans for festival week
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has announced the suspension of several Arjitha Sevas and special darshan categories during the annual Salakatla Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara, scheduled to be held in Tirumala from September 15 to 23. The decision comes as part of the temple administration's arrangements for the week-long festival, which draws tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the country.
According to an official release from the TTD, the Arjitha Sevas that will remain suspended throughout the festival period include 'Astadala Pada Padmaradhana Seva', 'Tiruppavada Seva', 'Arjita Kalyanotsavam', 'Unjal Seva' and 'Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva'. These are paid rituals that devotees book in advance to participate in the worship of the presiding deity. During the Brahmotsavams, the temple prioritises the main festival rituals, which involve processions of the processional deity, including the famous Garuda Seva and other key events.
In addition to the sevas, the TTD has also cancelled special darshan privileges for senior citizens, physically challenged persons, parents with infants, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and donors during the festival period. This means that these categories of devotees, who normally have dedicated queues or quicker access to the sanctum, will have to follow the general darshan route. The move is intended to manage the exceptionally heavy crowd expected during the nine-day festival, ensuring smooth movement and avoiding congestion in the temple complex.
The Brahmotsavams, also known as Salakatla Brahmotsavams, are one of the most significant annual festivals at the Tirumala temple. The event commemorates the descent of Lord Venkateswara to bless his devotees, and features a series of elaborate rituals, including the hoisting of the festival flag (Dhvajarohanam) on the first day, and the concluding ritual of the flag lowering and holy water sprinkling (Chakrasnanam) on the final day. The festival also includes the popular celestial wedding (Kalyanotsavam) of the deity, though the Arjita version of this is among the suspended sevas, while the main ritual will still be performed as part of the festival schedule.
Pilgrims planning to visit Tirumala during the Brahmotsavams are advised to take note of the changes and plan their pilgrimage accordingly. The TTD has appealed to devotees to cooperate with the temporary arrangements, emphasising that the suspension is only for the festival week and will be lifted immediately after. The administration has also indicated that devotees who have already booked the suspended sevas will receive full refunds, and that special darshan categories will resume once the festival concludes.
The decision reflects the TTD's ongoing efforts to balance religious sentiment with crowd management at one of the busiest pilgrimage sites in India. On regular days, the temple darshan can take several hours, and during Brahmotsavams, the number of visitors multiplies manifold. By temporarily restricting certain services, the administration aims to ensure that all devotees, especially those attending the festival for the first time, have a safe and orderly experience. The TTD has also made additional arrangements for drinking water, medical aid and queue management during the festival period.
The annual Brahmotsavams attract not only devotees from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana but also from other states and abroad. The festival is known for its vibrant processions, with the deity being taken out on different vahanams (vehicles) each day, including the iconic golden Garuda on the fifth day. The suspension of paid sevas and special darshans is a necessary measure that will allow the temple authorities to focus on the smooth conduct of these processions and the safety of the gathered devotees.
