Tilak Varma's blistering 60 off 29 balls seals India's T20I series win against Zimbabwe
Before India's three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, Tilak Varma had commented on the strike rate debate, saying that if the team does not lose early wickets, he can hit boundaries from the first ball. On Saturday, he backed up his words with an unbeaten 60 off 29 balls, including five fours and three sixes, with his first boundary coming off the second delivery. India, led by vice-captain Varma and Ishan Kishan's 81 off 44 balls, posted 219 for 5, and then bowled out Zimbabwe for 129 to win by 90 runs and take an unassailable lead in the series.
India's total is their sixth-highest T20I score away from home, but the start was not smooth. Abhishek Sharma continued his poor form, falling in the second over, edging a Blessing Muzarabani delivery to backward point. Vaibhav Suryavanshi briefly revived the innings with three fours and a six off Richard Ngarava, but Ngarava dismissed him later in the same over, exposing the teenager's vulnerability to the short ball.
Ishan Kishan, in fine form, took on the role of aggressor, while captain Shreyas Iyer played the anchor role, ensuring no collapse. Their 66-run partnership ended in the 10th over when Iyer holed out for 28 off 28 balls. At 95 for 3, Varma accelerated, scoring the second-fastest fifty of his international career at a strike rate of 206.89.
Varma's onslaught began in the 14th over, hitting three consecutive boundaries off Muzarabani. Kishan then hit two fours and a six in the next over. The pair rotated strike effectively, and between the 13th and 18th overs, India did not play a dot ball for 28 consecutive deliveries. The last seven overs yielded 98 runs at 14 per over. Kishan fell for 81 off 44 in the 18th over.
India's bowling started slowly, with 23 runs conceded in the first three overs. Mayank Yadav, impressive in his comeback, was less effective this match. Yash Thakur took his first international wicket in his second over, catching Brian Bennett off a top edge. Prince Yadav struck in his first over, dismissing Ben Curran with a sharp short ball.
Ravi Bishnoi introduced spin in the final over of the Powerplay and trapped Dion Myers with a wrong'un. Yadav added another wicket, and at 49 for 4, Zimbabwe's chase was effectively over. Tadiwanashe Marumani (24 off 19) and Brad Evans (19 off 11) showed some fight, but Zimbabwe were bowled out in the 18th over.
