Tiger Suspected in Gudalur Killings to Be Captured, Tamil Nadu Minister Assures

Tamil Nadu Forest Minister R.V. Ranjithkumar on Monday assured the State Assembly that the tiger suspected of killing two people in Gudalur in the Nilgiris district would be captured soon. He said three forest teams, three veterinarians, and a specialist have been deployed for the operation.

Responding to a special calling-attention motion, the Minister said three teams of forest officials were constituted immediately after the incidents. Three veterinarians, equipped with tranquillisers, have been stationed in the area, and a specialist veterinarian from Madurai has also been dispatched to assist in the capture.

“There will be no further deaths from tiger attacks,” Mr. Ranjithkumar said. “The animal will be captured and sent either to Vandalur or a tiger reserve,” he added. The Minister's remarks came amid rising concerns among local residents, who have been living in fear since the reported attacks.

The Minister also confirmed that the next of kin of the two deceased individuals have each been given compensation of ₹10 lakh. This payment is in line with existing government norms for human-wildlife conflict incidents, aimed at providing immediate relief to affected families.

Gudalur, located in the Nilgiris district, is a region known for its dense forest cover and proximity to wildlife corridors. This area is part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which supports a significant tiger population. However, the overlap between human settlements and animal habitats has periodically led to conflicts, posing challenges for both wildlife conservation and local safety.

The Forest Department's response has been swift, with teams working to track the animal's movements. The use of tranquillisers and the presence of a specialist veterinarian indicate a careful approach to avoid harming the tiger while ensuring public safety. Once captured, the tiger will be examined and then relocated to an appropriate facility, either the Vandalur zoo or a designated tiger reserve, as per protocol.

This incident highlights the broader issue of human-wildlife conflict in India, where increasing encroachment into forest areas often leads to such confrontations. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings to forest officials. The department has also stepped up patrols in the affected area.

While the capture operation is underway, the Minister's assurance reflects the state's commitment to resolving the situation without endangering the tiger, a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The compensation to the victims' families is a step toward addressing the immediate aftermath, though the long-term solution lies in sustainable coexistence measures, including better fencing, early warning systems, and habitat management.

As the search continues, local officials have warned against spreading unverified information that could create panic. The Forest Department has established a helpline for residents to report tiger movements or emergencies. The public has been advised to avoid venturing into known tiger corridors, especially during early morning and evening hours.

The Minister's statement to the Assembly is expected to bring some reassurance to the affected community, which has been on edge since the attacks. The successful resolution of this operation will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for handling similar conflicts in the future.
