At least a hundred people are feared dead and many more remain unaccounted for after flash floods tore through Gyirong Port, a key border crossing between Tibet and Nepal, on Wednesday. The torrent, captured on closed-circuit television, swept away vehicles and buildings as residents scrambled to safety. The dramatic footage was widely shared across international media and social media platforms.

Inside China, however, coverage has been markedly restrained. State broadcaster CCTV has aired only a single still image from the incident in its flagship newscast. Internet users in China have also found it difficult to locate the video or even posts discussing the scale of the disaster, owing to the country's strict online content regulations.

Authorities have launched a large-scale rescue operation involving hundreds of emergency workers. On Saturday, state media released footage showing rescue teams navigating a stretch of mud and rock, calling out to any survivors. President Xi Jinping chaired an emergency meeting to coordinate response efforts, and officials have issued regular updates on the missing, the dead, and the dangers posed by a barrier lake that has formed upstream and risks overflowing.

Despite these official statements, granular information remains scarce. There have been no firsthand accounts from survivors within Tibet, and no user-generated video from the affected areas has emerged on Chinese platforms. Relatives of the missing have not been heard from publicly, and independent communication with residents in the region is extremely difficult even in normal circumstances.

The restrained information flow stands in contrast to the extensive coverage seen elsewhere in the world. Previous incidents in the region have also shown that reporting on Tibet can be a sensitive matter for Beijing, which considers it an integral part of China. Observers note that the government's control over information becomes particularly apparent during emergencies, when international scrutiny often increases.

The floods have also affected the immediate border area with Nepal, and authorities have warned of secondary risks from the unstable barrier lake. Emergency teams are working to drain the lake and prevent further damage.

The full extent of the human toll remains unclear. International agencies and journalists have repeatedly sought additional details from Chinese authorities, but responses have been limited. The Chinese government said rescue work is continuing and that officials are prioritising the safety of residents in the affected zone.

As the operation enters its sixth day, pressure is mounting for greater transparency. Yet with communication channels constrained, families of the missing face an agonising wait alongside the wider public for verified information.
