Three-Year-Old Dies in Open Septic Tank Accident at Omkareshwar; Official Suspended
A three-year-old child died in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district after falling into an open septic tank while visiting the Omkareshwar Temple with his family. The district administration suspended a civic official for negligence on Monday and said legal action is being considered against a private lodge and a contractor.
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 24 when Tanush Usrathe, a resident of Nagpur, Maharashtra, arrived in Omkareshwar with his family to offer prayers at the famous Jyotirlinga. Shortly after they disembarked from a bus in Brahmpuri, the child moved ahead in poor visibility and fell into an uncovered septic tank.
Khandwa district collector Rishav Gupta said that Suresh Chandra Patidar, a Sub-Engineer with the Omkareshwar Nagar Parishad, was suspended for failing to ensure the tank was covered. The engineer had been tasked with overseeing the removal of debris near the tank and securing its lid after a private lodge was permitted to salvage materials from a demolished construction.
“The lodge had requested permission to pick out certain useful items from the debris of a recently demolished construction. When they were allowed, they delayed the clearing process and the contractor they hired also removed iron rods from the septic tank lid and damaged it. The engineer was responsible for overseeing the work and closing the tank. We are considering action against them all based on preliminary investigation,” Gupta said.
A government statement confirmed that Sanket Bhondve, Commissioner of the Urban Administration and Development Department, had ordered the suspension of Patidar for his role in the accident.
According to officials, the child's father immediately jumped into the tank and pulled his son out. The boy was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment after his lungs filled with contaminated water.
The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about open septic tanks and uncovered manholes across India, which lead to hundreds of child deaths each year. Activists have repeatedly called for stricter safety regulations and regular inspections to prevent such incidents.
