Three murder convicts escape from Kalaburagi jail, police launch manhunt

Three prisoners serving life sentences for murder escaped from Kalaburagi Central Jail in Karnataka in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

The escapees have been identified as Mastan of Islampur in Basavakalyan taluk, Santosh Basappa of Santapur village in Aurad taluk, and Sagar Bhimaraya of Bakkachowdi village in Bidar taluk. All three are residents of Bidar district.

According to preliminary reports, the convicts scaled the prison’s security wall using clothes and bedsheets tied together to descend the outer side. The escape occurred within the jurisdiction of the Farhatabad Police Station.

Senior prison officials and police personnel arrived at the jail soon after the incident was reported and launched an inquiry. Special teams have been formed to trace and apprehend the prisoners.

Police have intensified checks across Kalaburagi district and stepped up vigil along inter-district and state border areas as part of the search operation. Further details are awaited.
