Three Kochi police officers suspended over alleged bribe from scrap dealer
Three police officers attached to the Kalamassery station in Kochi have been suspended for allegedly accepting around ₹1 lakh from a scrap dealer during an investigation. The action was initiated after allegations of misconduct surfaced in connection with a theft case, officials said on Thursday.
The officers facing disciplinary action are sub-inspectors Sebastian Chacko and Shameer, and civil police officer Jijo. According to sources in the Kochi City police, the three were placed under suspension following a preliminary inquiry into the complaint.
The case relates to the investigation of a theft involving an Assam native, who had allegedly escaped police custody while being taken to the Aluva district hospital for a medical examination in July. He was later re-arrested. During the course of the probe, the officers reportedly found that a scrap dealer had links with the accused person.
“It is alleged that the three officers took money from the scrap dealer after finding that he had links with the accused in the theft case,” a senior police officer said, requesting anonymity. He added that a detailed investigation into the allegation is currently underway.
The suspension of the officers is part of a disciplinary process intended to ensure accountability and maintain public trust in the police force. The Kerala Police have a defined procedure for handling such complaints, and the accused officers will have an opportunity to present their version during the inquiry.
