Three dead, seven injured as bus rams car near Samayapuram on NH
TIRUCHI: Three persons, including a nine-year-old child, were killed and seven others injured when an omni bus rammed a car near Samayapuram on the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway late Monday night. The deceased were identified as P. Pandian, 49, R. Dhanalakshmi, 47, and R. Paveen, 9, all residents of Pudukkottai district.
According to the Samayapuram police, the car was carrying ten persons, including the driver, who were en route to the Samayapuram temple. The accident occurred when the driver, who reportedly missed a junction, attempted to reverse the vehicle on the highway. An omni bus travelling behind the car collided with it, crushing the vehicle and trapping the occupants.
Police personnel from Samayapuram rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. The injured were extricated from the wreckage and taken to nearby hospitals. However, three of the occupants succumbed to their injuries. The seven others are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.
The bodies of the deceased were sent to Srirangam Government Hospital for post-mortem. The passengers of the omni bus escaped with no injuries. A case has been registered by the Samayapuram police, and further investigation is underway.
The national highway, which connects Tiruchi to Chennai, remains busy with vehicular traffic throughout the day. The accident spot is near the Samayapuram temple, a prominent pilgrimage destination that attracts devotees from across the region. Local authorities have often urged motorists to exercise caution on this stretch, particularly during night hours.
