Three Days After Fatal Police Shooting, Internet Still Suspended in J&K's Doda District
JAMMU: Internet services remained suspended across Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir for the third consecutive day on Sunday, following the death of a 30-year-old man in police firing last week. The shutdown, which began on July 16, has disrupted communication, online transactions, and other essential services for residents and tourists alike.
The incident occurred on July 16 when a police team attempted to stop suspicious individuals in the Jai Valley area on suspicion of cattle smuggling. According to police, a scuffle broke out during the interception, and there was an alleged attempt to snatch an officer's weapon. In response, another member of the patrol party opened fire, killing 30-year-old Arif Hussain, an autorickshaw driver, and injuring three Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel.
Following the death, protests erupted in Bhaderwah town and surrounding areas. Local residents have been demanding justice for Hussain and the restoration of internet services. Officials have not issued any statement regarding the restoration of internet connectivity. Sources also indicated that internet speed on mobile and broadband has been restricted in the neighbouring Kishtwar district amid heightened security.
Locals have complained that students, remote workers, and job seekers are struggling due to the internet shutdown. Tourists, too, are facing difficulties as they cannot make online payments through apps. Police have stated that initial investigations reveal no terrorist links to the incident.
