Thoothukudi Corporation to extend daily water supply to all 60 wards from August 15
In a significant move to address the city's drinking water needs, the Thoothukudi Corporation will expand and regularise daily water supply to all 60 wards from August 15. Currently, about 40 wards receive water on a daily basis, while the remaining areas depend on alternate-day or less frequent supply.
According to official information, the Corporation manages 36 overhead tanks within its limits. The city has 93,050 domestic water connections, 3,153 non-domestic connections, and four industrial connections across all wards. With rapid urban expansion, residents have long faced water scarcity, making the decision a potential relief for thousands of households.
The move has been welcomed by M.S. Muthu, city secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Thoothukudi. However, he stressed the need for sustained long-term measures. He pointed out that wards such as 15, 16, and 17 currently receive water only on alternate days or once in three days. Regular daily supply, he said, would provide much-needed relief to residents in these areas.
Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy said the initiative aims to meet the drinking water requirements of all residents. He noted that a 24x7 water supply system is already being run on a pilot basis in 10 wards. Expanding the supply across the entire Corporation, he added, would help streamline this round-the-clock system in the future.
The Corporation's plan marks a step towards equitable water distribution, but its success will depend on consistent implementation and maintenance of infrastructure. Residents and civic groups have urged the authorities to ensure that the daily supply is reliable and that no ward is left behind.
