Thane Corporator Assaults Woman Doctor and Hospital Staff Over NICU Bed Dispute

CCTV footage from KDMC Hospital in Thane's Dombivli shows a local corporator, Ramesh Mhatre, physically assaulting a woman doctor and other staff members. The incident, which occurred over a dispute regarding the unavailability of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) beds, has sparked widespread condemnation.

According to hospital officials, the family of a pregnant woman was informed that the newborn might require NICU care, but all beds were occupied. Doctors suggested transferring the patient to another hospital, which led to an argument. The corporator and his supporters then entered the hospital and began attacking staff, as captured on CCTV.

The footage, which lasts over three minutes, shows Mhatre punching and slapping staff, including a woman doctor who was attempting to use her phone. The doctor was struck from behind, causing her phone to fall. The attack continued despite her efforts to retreat.

Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Commissioner Abhinay Goyal confirmed that a first information report (FIR) has been filed against Mhatre, who belongs to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Hospital employees held a protest demanding strict action.

The United Doctors Front condemned the attack, stating that such incidents are becoming increasingly common and represent an assault on the entire healthcare system. They emphasized that violence against healthcare workers undermines public trust and safety.

Local authorities have assured a thorough investigation. The incident has reignited calls for stronger laws to protect medical professionals from assault.
