Thailand visa-free entry for Indians expected to boost arrivals to 2.7 million in 2025

Thailand's decision to grant 30-day visa-free entry to Indian nationals is projected to push visitor numbers from India to a record 2.7 million in 2025, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The policy, approved by the Thai cabinet, awaits publication in the Royal Gazette to take effect.

As of July 18, Thailand had recorded 17.3 million foreign arrivals this year, a decline of over 3% compared to the same period last year. India remains the third-largest source market, with 1.3 million arrivals so far in 2024, and total Indian arrivals are expected to reach 2.55 million by year-end.

Patsee Permvongsenee, executive director for ASEAN, South Asia, and South Pacific at TAT, cited a positive outlook for the Indian market, driven by increased flight connectivity from smaller Indian cities. Indian carriers have added new routes, and airlines that paused services due to the Middle East conflict and fuel costs are restoring capacity.

India's economic growth is expected to sustain outbound travel, with TAT forecasting India's outbound market to reach 50 million trips by 2030, up from 32.7 million in 2025. Thailand is India's third most popular overseas destination, especially for leisure, as many Indian travellers find it more affordable than premium domestic holidays.

However, a weak Indian rupee against the US dollar may dampen travel plans for some middle-income earners, potentially causing delays. Khajornrit Khwanmongkol, director of TAT's New Delhi office, noted that Indian travellers in Thailand are high spenders, averaging 6,200 baht per day and over 36,000 baht per trip. He added that Thailand's earlier shift to visa-on-arrival caused confusion and hurt demand.

Nattachit Oonsiam, director of TAT's Mumbai office, highlighted that business and incentive travel groups had shifted to Vietnam due to uncertainty over Thailand's visa rules. Vietnam offers visa-free entry to Phu Quoc Island for Indians, though visas are required elsewhere.

Currently, approximately 66,000 weekly airline seats are available on Thailand-India routes. India's expanding aviation sector, including new airports and aircraft, is expected to support further growth. Diwali and Christmas account for about 45% of India's annual outbound travel, and TAT recommends promoting Thailand six to eight weeks ahead of these holidays.

With over 500 million active social media users in India, YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp are key platforms for tourism marketing. TAT reports that 44% of Indian travellers are influenced by social media, while 60% rely on recommendations from friends and family. About 41% prefer family holidays, and 35% choose accommodation based on experience. Solo travel and small groups of up to three people are growing, typically booking less than a month in advance.
