Telangana's Peak Power Load Crosses 19,000 MW for First Time, Third in South India
Hyderabad: Telangana's power system has recorded a new milestone, with the peak power load on its generation and transmission network crossing the 19,000 megawatt (MW) mark for the first time. On Wednesday, September 9, the state clocked a peak load of 19,543 MW at 10:41 am, with energy consumption touching 324 million units (MU). This makes Telangana the third state in South India to achieve this feat, after Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The previous day, September 8, had already seen a record peak load of 18,392 MW at 2:57 pm, surpassing the earlier high of 18,228 MW recorded on March 13 this year. On September 7, the peak load stood at 18,227 MW. The upward trend continued on Thursday, September 10, with the peak load again exceeding 19,000 MW. According to officials of TG-Transco, the daily energy consumption has remained above 300 MU throughout September, with the maximum demand never falling below 17,000 MW.
Deputy Chief Minister M. Bhatti Vikramarka, speaking in the Assembly on Thursday, attributed the rising demand to dry weather conditions and a significant rainfall deficit. As of September 10, the state's rainfall deficit stood at 24 per cent below normal, influenced by El Nino conditions. He stated that the peak load is expected to break the 20,000 MW barrier in the coming days as demand continues to rise.
The surge in power demand has implications for the state's distribution utilities, which purchase energy from exchanges to meet the shortfall. Bhatti Vikramarka emphasised that increasing the use of non-conventional energy sources such as solar, wind, and biogas would reduce the burden on these utilities. He also highlighted the potential of solarising agricultural pumpsets, of which there are around 30 lakh in Telangana. This, he said, would help the utilities and the government immensely, as ₹14,000 crore is spent annually to provide free power to farm pumpsets.
Under the Indira Soura Giri Jala Vikasam scheme, the state government has been promoting solar-powered agricultural pumpsets. A special focus is on 6.7 lakh acres of land distributed to tribals under the Forest Rights Act in the past. The scheme aims to reduce dependence on conventional energy and lower the subsidy burden on the exchequer.
Peak power load refers to the highest demand for electricity recorded during a specific period. It indicates the maximum stress on the generation and transmission infrastructure. Crossing the 19,000 MW mark signifies a new level of energy requirement for Telangana, reflecting economic activity, population growth, and agricultural needs. Being the third state in South India to reach this level, after Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, places Telangana among the larger power-consuming states in the region.
The record peak load reflects both the growing energy needs of Telangana and the challenges posed by climate variability. With a rainfall deficit and anticipated El Nino impact, the demand for electricity, particularly for agricultural operations, is likely to remain high. The state's ability to meet this demand through a mix of conventional and renewable sources will be closely watched. As Telangana inches closer to the 20,000 MW milestone, the focus will be on balancing growth with sustainability.
