Telangana's Breakfast Scheme Gets ₹22.18 Crore Boost from Pharma Companies

The Telangana government's breakfast scheme received a significant boost with a total of ₹22.18 crore in corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions from two major pharmaceutical companies. Divi's Laboratories Limited contributed ₹12.18 crore, while Aurobindo Pharma Limited donated ₹10 crore.

Representatives from both companies, along with officials from the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation, met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and handed over the cheques. The funds are intended to support the state's initiative to provide breakfast to schoolchildren, a programme aimed at improving nutrition and educational outcomes.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister stated that the government is exploring ways to involve local farmers in areas where centralised kitchens for the breakfast scheme have been established. He suggested encouraging farmers to cultivate organic crops such as vegetables and rice, so that these essentials can be procured directly from them. This move is expected to boost local agriculture and provide fresh, nutritious food for the beneficiaries.

The breakfast scheme, launched earlier this year, covers students in government schools across the state. It is part of a broader effort to address child hunger and enhance school attendance. The CSR contributions will help sustain and expand the programme.

IISc scientists reveal how encephalomyocarditis virus commandeers host cells

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have used cryo-electron microscopy to reveal how the encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) hijacks host protein synthesis. The study, published in eLife, shows that the virus's IRES directly interacts with host ribosome and initiator tRNA in a previously unknown mechanism, offering potential therapeutic targets.
