Telangana weaver crafts matchbox-size saree in 170 minutes ahead of National Handloom Day
In a remarkable display of skill and precision, a handloom weaver from Sircilla in Telangana has woven a saree so fine that it can be folded and placed inside a matchbox. Veldi Hariprasad completed the intricate task in just 170 minutes on Monday, ahead of National Handloom Day, which is celebrated every year on August 7.
The saree is 5.5 metres long and 45 inches wide, yet weighs only 175 grams. Mr. Hariprasad wove it on a traditional handloom, using methods that have been practised in the region for generations. The process was witnessed by local residents and fellow weavers, who gathered to see the attempt.
The miniature saree, though compact, retains all the essential elements of a regular saree, including the border and the pallu. This makes it a unique creation that blends tradition with novelty.
Mr. Hariprasad, who hails from a family of weavers, said the effort was aimed at drawing attention to the craft and encouraging younger generations to take up handloom weaving. He noted that the tradition, which has sustained families in Sircilla for centuries, faces increasing competition from mechanised looms and cheaper imports.
Typically, a saree of this length takes several days to weave on a handloom. Mr. Hariprasad’s ability to complete the work in under three hours is a testament to his expertise. The fine gauge of the yarn and the evenness of the weave reflect a high degree of precision and control.
Those present at the demonstration expressed admiration for the weaver's dexterity and patience. Onlookers carefully examined the finished product, marvelling at its compact size and delicate texture. Many said that such feats not only showcase individual talent but also bring visibility to the entire handloom sector, which employs millions of artisans across India.
This is not the first time Mr. Hariprasad has earned attention for his work. He has previously created theme-based sarees inspired by 'Nari Shakti' (power of womanhood) and 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', the celebration marking 75 years of India's independence. His creations have been appreciated for their artistic value and technical complexity.
National Handloom Day was instituted in 2015 by the Government of India to honour the handloom community and highlight their contribution to the country's socio-economic development. It also serves as a reminder of the need to protect and promote handloom products in a market increasingly dominated by power looms.
Sircilla, in the Rajanna Sircilla district, is one of Telangana's most important handloom centres. The town is known for its fine cotton and synthetic sarees, which are traded in markets across India. However, the industry has faced significant challenges in recent years, including low wages, lack of modern design inputs, and competition from quick-turnaround power looms.
