Telangana set to receive ₹2,000 crore World Bank aid for digital governance push
The Telangana government is poised to receive significant financial support from the World Bank for its digital governance initiatives, marking a major step towards comprehensive online service delivery across departments.
According to senior officials, the World Bank has given in-principle approval for assistance of US$217 million (approximately ₹2,000 crore) to the State government. The funding is intended to promote digital governance and enhance transparency in public service delivery.
The proposed project encompasses a wide range of services and includes the establishment of a dedicated data centre. “It is basically aimed at complete digital transformation of the State,” a senior official said. The State government has already uploaded a preliminary project report outlining its plans to extend digital services across various sectors.
The next phase involves submitting a detailed project report (DPR) to the Union Finance Ministry’s Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) for clearance, which is required for obtaining external funding. The DPR will detail the methodology for ensuring digital services reach the grassroots level.
“We will go for invitation of request for proposals, floating tenders and execution of works once the DEA gives its concurrence to the project,” the official added. This development follows the recent constitution of a committee by the State government to strengthen digital governance, aiming to improve efficiency and service delivery across departments.
A World Bank delegation, led by Mahesh Uttamchandani, the bank’s regional practice director for digital and AI, recently met with a government team headed by Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju. Discussions covered key areas such as building basic infrastructure for new data centres in Bharat Future City, Artificial Intelligence, cyber security, and digital public infrastructure.
The World Bank team appreciated Telangana’s conducive policy environment for extending digital services to citizens and requested the government to prepare a comprehensive plan to facilitate further cooperation in the sector.
This funding is expected to accelerate the State’s digital transformation agenda, potentially improving access to government services for millions of residents.
