Telangana seeks Cambridge partnership to turn Hyderabad into global knowledge hub

The Telangana government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has invited the University of Cambridge to partner with the State in its efforts to establish Hyderabad as a leading global centre for knowledge, research, and innovation. The invitation was extended during a meeting between a Telangana delegation and academics from the renowned British university in the United Kingdom on [date of the meeting].

The delegation, part of the 'Telangana Rising' initiative, included IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu, Chief Minister's Adviser K. Ramakrishna Rao, and Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan. The discussions focused on building a strategic partnership in education, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

According to the delegation, the interaction highlighted the opportunities available in Hyderabad for leading international educational and research institutions. The Chief Minister invited Cambridge to collaborate with the State government in its vision of transforming Hyderabad into a knowledge and innovation hub.

Representatives from Cambridge who participated in the meeting included Professor Jaideep Prabhu, Professor of Marketing at Cambridge Judge Business School, and Professor Venkat Sireesh Gandikota, also from the Judge Business School, who co-chairs the Frugal AI initiative. Both expressed interest in working with Telangana and responded positively to the opportunities presented, the delegation said.

The discussions covered conducting educational programmes in Hyderabad, undertaking joint research projects, and developing mechanisms to support young entrepreneurs. The two sides agreed on the need to create a concrete action plan for collaboration in incubation and the development of start-ups.

This proposed partnership is expected to open new avenues for Telangana to work with one of the world's oldest and most prestigious universities. It is also seen as a step forward in realising the Telangana Rising vision, which aims to position Hyderabad as an international centre for knowledge, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The meeting is part of a broader effort by the State government to attract international academic collaborations and boost the local innovation ecosystem. Hyderabad already hosts several leading educational institutions and research centres, and the government hopes that a partnership with Cambridge will further enhance its standing as a global destination for higher education and research.

No specific timeline or details of the collaboration have been announced yet. Further talks are expected to define the scope and terms of the partnership.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
