Telangana plans ₹84,790 crore for Hyderabad, Deputy CM asks builders to focus on affordable housing
Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has said the State government has drawn up a comprehensive development plan involving ₹84,790 crore for Hyderabad and its surrounding areas, with the stated aim of transforming the city into a world-class urban centre.
Speaking at the NAREDCO Telangana Property Show at HITEX in Hyderabad, he said designs and tendering processes have been initiated for projects worth nearly ₹55,000 crore, while several other works are at different stages of implementation.
The Deputy Chief Minister said the government views the real estate and construction sectors not merely as business entities but as wealth creators and partners in the State's development. NAREDCO, the National Real Estate Development Council, is an industry body representing developers and allied businesses.
Where the money is earmarked
Giving a break-up of the proposed expenditure, Mr. Vikramarka said ₹52,706 crore has been earmarked for infrastructure development through the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, the Hyderabad Growth Corridor, Metro Rail and other agencies.
Another ₹15,849 crore has been allocated to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, ₹4,000 crore to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, ₹2,500 crore to the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation and ₹2,163 crore to the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation. The Hyderabad Road Development Corporation has been allocated ₹500 crore for road works.
Separately, he said the government has drawn up plans to invest nearly ₹93,000 crore in road infrastructure across Telangana.
Plea on affordable housing
Mr. Vikramarka called upon real estate developers to give equal importance to affordable housing for poor and middle-class families, rather than concentrating only on luxury residential projects. Access to affordable homes has remained a persistent concern in the Greater Hyderabad region, where property prices have risen steadily over the past decade.
Musi river project
On the Musi rejuvenation project, he said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is determined to transform the polluted river into an economic and tourism asset for Hyderabad. The first phase of the project, involving works worth approximately ₹7,500 crore, is being prepared for launch. The Musi flows through the heart of the city and has for long carried untreated sewage and industrial discharge, an issue successive governments have promised to address.
Industrial relocation and environment
The Deputy Chief Minister said the government has introduced the HILT Policy to make Hyderabad environmentally sustainable. Industries located within the Outer Ring Road limits are being planned for phased relocation outside the city, with the stated objective of reducing pollution. The Outer Ring Road corridor has seen substantial industrial and residential development in recent years, and shifting units out of it would have implications for both employers and residents.
The announcements set out the government's stated spending priorities across transport, water supply, municipal services and housing in the State capital region. The Deputy Chief Minister's remarks indicate that a portion of the projects is at the design and tendering stage, while others are already under implementation. Project-wise schedules, funding sources and completion timelines were not detailed in the address.
