Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Proposes Lowering Lok Sabha Age Limit to 21

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced on Sunday that the state assembly will pass a resolution in August recommending a reduction in the minimum age for Lok Sabha membership from 25 to 21 years. He also suggested lowering the minimum age for Rajya Sabha and state Legislative Council memberships from 30 to 25 years.

Speaking at an event, Reddy said he would submit a representation to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, urging the introduction of a bill to amend the age requirements. He called on the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to consider bringing the bill for discussion in the ongoing parliamentary session.

“The proposal aims to empower the youth and give them a greater role in the country’s democratic process,” Reddy said. He added that the resolution in the Telangana Legislative Assembly would serve as a formal recommendation to the central government.

Currently, the Constitution of India sets the minimum age for membership in the Lok Sabha at 25 years and for the Rajya Sabha at 30 years. The proposed changes would require a constitutional amendment, which needs a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament.

Reddy’s announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about youth participation in politics. He described the move as a step towards making the political system more inclusive and responsive to younger generations.

The chief minister’s remarks were made in the context of a recent protest by the Committee for Judicial Accountability and Reform (CJP), which he praised. “The Congress party supported the CJP protest from outside, but the credit goes to the youth who led the agitation for accountability,” Reddy said, linking the demand for age reduction to the broader theme of youth engagement.
