Telangana bus crash: 6 dead, 12 injured as bus rams into stationary lorry

At least six passengers were killed and 12 others injured after a speeding private bus crashed into a stationary lorry near Telangana's Suryapet district early on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred at around 5 a.m. on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway, a route frequently used by intercity travellers.

The bus, carrying 42 passengers, was travelling from Hyderabad to Eluru via Vijayawada when it collided with the lorry, which was parked on the roadside. According to police officials, the impact was severe, leaving the front portion of the bus mangled and trapping several passengers inside. Rescue teams, including local police and fire services, were rushed to the spot and worked for hours to extricate the victims.

The injured, including two persons in critical condition, have been shifted to the Government Hospital in Kodad and other nearby medical facilities. District authorities have confirmed that the death toll may rise as some of the injured are reported to be in a serious state. “We are doing everything possible to provide timely medical assistance,” said a senior official overseeing the rescue operation.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus was overspeeding at the time of the accident. However, officials have not ruled out driver fatigue or poor visibility as contributing factors. A case has been registered, and a detailed inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the crash. Eyewitness accounts are being recorded, and the bus driver is among those injured and under treatment.

Local residents and passerby were among the first to respond, helping pull passengers out of the wreckage and alerting authorities. The highway remained partially blocked for several hours, causing delays for morning commuters. Traffic was restored after the wrecked vehicles were cleared.

This incident highlights growing concerns about road safety on intercity highways in Telangana. According to recent government data, overspeeding and negligent driving account for a significant share of road accidents in the state. Activists-have called for stricter enforcement of speed limits and better signage near accident-prone zones. Meanwhile, senior state officials have expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced compensation for the families of the deceased and assistance to the injured. The exact amount is expected to be confirmed soon.

Further details, including the identities of the deceased, are awaited. Authorities have urged the public not to speculate and to rely on official updates as the investigation progresses.
