Tejaswin Shankar in Second Place After Opening Day of Decathlon Despite Knee Issue

India's national record holder in decathlon, Tejaswin Shankar, finished the first day of competition in second place with a total of 4,339 points after five events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday.

Shankar, who earlier withdrew from the men's high jump due to a knee injury, began the decathlon with a time of 10.96 seconds in the 100m, earning 870 points. He then produced a personal best of 7.82m in the long jump, improving his previous best of 7.67m and gaining 1,015 points. This effort moved him to second place overall.

In the shot put, Shankar recorded a best throw of 13.09m, securing 673 points and placing him seventh in that event. After three events, he was in fifth position with 2,558 points. However, strong performances in the remaining two events of the day – the high jump and 400m – lifted him to second place by the end of the first day.

Shankar's participation in the decathlon comes despite his earlier knee problem, which forced him out of the individual high jump. The decathlon continues with the remaining five events on the second day.
