Teacher's Family Loses ₹45 Lakh in Fake Investment Scheme After Earlier Cyberfraud

A 35-year-old school teacher from Bengaluru has lost ₹45 lakh in a fraudulent investment scheme, marking the second time her family has been targeted by cybercriminals. The incident, which unfolded over several months, highlights the growing threat of recovery scams that prey on individuals already struggling with financial losses.

According to a complaint filed with the East CEN Police, the teacher, a resident of Kamaraj Road, said her husband had previously been cheated in a separate cyberfraud, leaving the family with significant debt. To recover their losses, the couple took out a gold loan and began searching for investment opportunities that promised higher returns.

In November 2025, they came across an online investment application promoted on social media. The operators behind the app assured them of unusually high returns. Trusting these claims, the couple borrowed additional money and transferred funds from the husband's bank account to several beneficiary accounts specified by the fraudsters.

Between November 2025 and February 20, 2026, the couple transferred a total of ₹45,00,000 across multiple transactions. When they later attempted to withdraw their investment and the promised profits, they found that the application was inaccessible and all contact numbers of the operators had been switched off or blocked.

Realizing they had been deceived, the teacher lodged a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. However, she stated that due to mental stress and work pressure, she could not approach the police immediately for a formal complaint.

Based on her complaint, the police registered a case on Friday and have initiated an investigation to identify the fraudsters, trace the money trail, and take legal action. Further investigation is underway.

Senior cybercrime investigators note that such cases are becoming increasingly common. Cybercriminals often target individuals who have already suffered financial losses, offering fake investment schemes or recovery services that promise to reclaim lost money. “They exploit the victim’s desperation and willingness to take risks,” said an investigator. “Even those who have experienced online fraud before can fall victim again when they try to recover their earlier losses.”

Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to verify the legitimacy of any online investment platform before transferring money. They advise consulting official financial regulators and avoiding platforms that guarantee unrealistic returns. In case of suspected fraud, citizens should immediately report the incident on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the helpline number 1930.

This case serves as a reminder that cybercriminals constantly devise new ways to deceive people. While technology offers convenience, it also demands vigilance. The police have appealed to the public to exercise caution and not succumb to the lure of quick profits, especially in uncertain financial circumstances.
